Although the 2001-02 New Jersey Nets were a superior team from an offensive and overall record (52-30) standpoint, getting swept in the NBA Finals by the mighty Los Angeles Lakers didn’t help their case.
Instead, the 2002-03 Nets take the crown as the best team in franchise history. Jason Kidd, Kenyon Martin, Richard Jefferson, Kerry Kittles and Co. posted the league’s best defensive rating (98.1) en route to a 49-33 finish.
In the playoffs, they beat the Milwaukee Bucks in six games before sweeping the Celtics and Detroit Pistons. They lost in the NBA Finals to Tim Duncan’s San Antonio Spurs, but the Nets at least put up a fight by forcing the series to six games.
