The now extinct Seattle SuperSonics (RIP) get an honorable mention on this list, because it doesn’t make sense for Oklahoma City Thunder fans to reminisce about the good ol’ days with Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp.
The 1978-79 Sonics with Jack Sikma, Gus Williams and Dennis Johnson won the organization’s only championship thanks to their No. 1 ranked defense, but only 22 NBA teams existed at that point in time. Also, competition outside of the Pacific Division left a lot to be desired.
It’s worth noting the ’79 team, but the 1995-96 Sonics get the nod as the best in franchise history. Head coach George Karl led Payton, Kemp and Detlef Schrempf to a 64-18 record (best in the Western Conference). They beat the Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets and Utah Jazz en route to an NBA Finals appearance, but lost in six games to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls—which is nothing to be ashamed of.
