It’s tough to think about the Charlotte Hornets franchise without thinking of former Rookie of the Year Larry Johnson.
Only four teams in Charlotte’s history have made it past the first round of the playoffs, but the 1992-93 squad with L.J. had the best relative defensive rating of the quartet. The team only finished 44-38 on the season, but the stats from individual players were remarkably impressive.
The then 23-year-old Johnson played 40.5 minutes per game and averaged 22.1 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists. His teammate, 22-year-old Alonzo Mourning, averaged 21 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game. Only making it to the Eastern Conference Semifinals isn’t much of a feat, but on a pure stats basis, the Johnson/Mourning tandem was one of the best young duos the NBA has ever seen.
