Jefferson Leads Bobcats Past Lakers
Al Jefferson scored 40 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in the Bobcats' 110-100 win over the Lakers.Tags: NBA, Los Angeles Lakers, Charlotte Bobcats, Al Jefferson, Jodie Meeks

LOS ANGELES -- Make no bones about it. Coach Mike D'Antoni's skeleton roster was no match for the opportunistic Charlotte Bobcats and Al Jefferson's dominating presence in the paint.
Jefferson tied a career high with 40 points, 16 of them in the fourth quarter, and grabbed 18 rebounds to help the Bobcats send the floundering Los Angeles Lakers to their sixth straight defeat with a 110-100 victory Friday night.
"I have those moments," Jefferson said. "They kept running plays for me and I kept scoring. In the first quarter, they weren't going down for me, but I just kept staying with it because I knew sooner or later it would start going down for me. "
Jefferson set a franchise record with his 11th straight game of 20 or more points, eclipsing the mark set by Jason Richardson in 2007-08. It was the 13th game this season in which an opposing player scored at least 30 against the Lakers, something that happened in 18 games last season -- and there are still 35 games remaining.
Jefferson is averaging 19.9 points and 10.7 boards, but wasn't selected for the All-Star Game and has yet to play in one in his 10 years in the league.
"I've been disappointed with the All-Star Games, man, for many years. So I don't listen to the hype," Jefferson said.
Gerald Henderson added 20 points for the Bobcats. Starting point guard Kemba Walker missed his sixth straight game since a sprained left ankle ended his career-opening consecutive game streak of 190. Ramon Sessions, who has started every game at the point during Walker's absence, had 13 assists and nine points.
Sessions, along with starting power forward Josh McRoberts and reserve guard Jannero Pargo -- all former Lakers -- combined for 26 points and the Bobcats snapped a string of five straight defeats against Los Angeles.
Charlotte shot 52.3 percent from the field, improving to 5-0 when shooting at least 50 percent. The victory was the Bobcats' ninth on the road, four more than all of last season.
Still missing Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar and Xavier Henry because of injuries, the Lakers lost for the 18th time in 21 games and are only a half-game ahead of last-place Sacramento in the Western Conference standings just four seasons after winning their 16th NBA title. Pau Gasol had 24 points for Los Angeles and Nick Young added 21 off the bench.
The Lakers have given up 100 or more points in 14 consecutive games, matching the club's longest such streak since a 17-game stretch in 1986-87.
Trailing by as many as 20 points after a pair of free throws by Jefferson with 4:21 left in the third quarter, the Lakers sliced the margin to 86-73 on a four-point play by Ryan Kelly.
Los Angeles got it down to 86-78 on a layup by Robert Sacre with 11:01 to play, but that was as close as the Lakers got. Jefferson scored the Bobcats' first eight points of the final quarter to help keep the Lakers at bay.
"He's been doing this to a lot of people," D'Antoni said. "We tried a little bit of everything. We dug. We tried to play him a little bit straight up, at first. We tried to double-team him."
Jefferson, who signed a three-year, $41 million contract with the Bobcats in July, powered them to a 62-49 halftime lead with 18 points and eight rebounds. Charlotte shot 58 percent in the half, and never trailed after Jefferson's finger roll gave the Bobcats a 26-25 lead with 1:37 left in the first quarter.
In the other meeting this season, the Lakers beat the Bobcats 88-85 at Charlotte with a game-ending 13-4 run and 21 points by Kobe Bryant -- one of only six games the NBA's fourth leading scorer has played in this season because of a torn Achilles tendon and a fracture in his left knee. Jefferson was held to 14 points that night.

Game notes

The game ball was being sent to New York to mark the final day of NBA Commissioner David Stern's tenure. He is retiring Saturday on the 30th anniversary of his first day on the job. ... Stern saw the Lakers win eight league championships, make 12 trips to the finals and record eight 60-win seasons during his reign. ... Raptors Cruise To Third Straight Win
DeMar DeRozan scored 19 points to led the Raptors to a 100-90 win over the Nuggets.Tags: DeMar DeRozan

DENVER -- Toronto coach Dwane Casey wasn't ready to celebrate after the Raptors ended a decade-long drought in Denver. He was too upset about his team's lackluster finish.
DeMar DeRozan scored 19 points, Terrence Ross had 18 and Toronto, after opening a 25-point lead, settled for a 100-90 victory over the Nuggets on Friday night.
"We will take the `W,' but it was not a quality finish," Casey said. "I let the players know I was disappointed in the close. You can't come in and feel like you have the game won with a 20-point lead. You have to continue to execute, be strong with the ball and continue to execute defensively if you want to be serious about winning in this league."
Jonas Valanciunas and Kyle Lowry added 13 points apiece for the Raptors, who snapped a nine-game losing streak in the Mile High City dating to 2003.
Still, Casey's postgame critique on his team's fourth-quarter play -- the Raptors were outscored 20-14 in the period -- outweighed any sense of relief over the end of the streak.
"We have to finish a lot better," Lowry said. "This is the NBA. Teams are going to make a run. We're not going to be negative. We won the game. But we have to finish better than that."
The Nuggets were dealing with their own problems. They announced during the game that guard Nate Robinson had season-ending surgery earlier Friday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Robinson was injured in a spill underneath the Nuggets' basket during the first quarter of Wednesday night's loss to the Charlotte Bobcats.
The Nuggets also were without leading scorer Ty Lawson, who missed his second consecutive game Friday with a left rotator cuff strain.
"We don't want anybody to feel sorry for us and we won't feel sorry for ourselves," Nuggets coach Brian Shaw said. "We just have to continue to fight, stay positive, keep working and just be more fundamentally sound."
J.J. Hickson and Evan Fournier led the Nuggets with 18 points apiece. Hickson also had 13 rebounds. Randy Foye, normally a shooting guard switched to the point in the absence of Lawson and Robinson, had 10 points and a career-high 16 assists. But he also committed eight of the Nuggets' 26 turnovers, which led to 29 points for Toronto.
"Randy played 43 minutes, Evan 38 minutes, and they're not accustomed to playing that many minutes as well," Shaw said. "They started getting tired, then we started losing our fundamentals and throwing the ball all over the place. That was our biggest thing tonight."
Hickson said it is also going to take some time for players to adjust to new, sometimes unfamiliar roles thrust on them by the backcourt injuries.
"It's going to be a process," Hickson said. "I can't say it's going to be a long process, because we don't have much time. It has to be a quick process. But I think once guys get adjusted and settled in, we'll be good."
Toronto moved to a season high four games above .500 (25-21) and tied a franchise record with its 11th win in January. The Raptors also won 11 games in January 2002.
Leading by seven at halftime, the Raptors put together an 11-2 run late in the third quarter to go up 84-68 with 2:46 left in the period. DeRozan ignited the surge by driving through traffic and putting in a reverse layup off the glass and helped keep it going by knocking down a pair of jumpers.
By the start of the fourth quarter, the Raptors led by 16 points and 50 seconds later, Valanciunas dunked to stretch Toronto's advantage to 90-70.
After Timofey Mozgov scored on a turnaround jumper for Denver, Toronto reeled off seven straight points, including a 3-pointer by John Salmons for a 97-72 lead with 8:47 left. The Nuggets made a late push with a 14-2 run cutting it to 99-86 on a dunk by Kenneth Faried with 3:32 remaining.
But Ross then blocked Fournier's driving layup attempt and after Valanciunas made one of two free throws, the Nuggets lost another possession on a turnover by Foye, failing to get the deficit under double digits.
The Raptors turned a steal into a breakaway dunk by Ross for a 60-53 lead at halftime. The rim-rattling jam brought the Raptors' bench to its feet.

Game notes

Foye had 11 assists in the first half, most by a Nuggets player in a half since Steve Blake had 11 on Feb. 14, 2007. ... Toronto won for the first time in Denver since an 81-74 victory on Dec. 30, 2003. ... Hickson has had a double-double in 12 of his last 23 games.

Grizzlies Hold Off Wolves
Mike Conley suffered a sprained right ankle and had to be carried off as the Grizzlies topped the Wolves to finish 11-4 in January.Tags: Kevin Love, Mike Conley, Zach Randolph

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Memphis Grizzlies are making a move in the Western Conference and are doing it on the road.
Zach Randolph had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Memphis overcame another strong effort by Kevin Love to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 94-90 Friday night.
Courtney Lee added 16 points for the Grizzlies, who have won five straight games and 10 of their last 11. Memphis has won six straight away from home, including a sweep of a three-game trip to Portland, Sacramento and Minnesota.
"It feels good, we are still getting to where we want to get," Randolph said.
One-half game behind Dallas for eighth place in the Western Conference, the Grizzlies are 13-7 on the road and 12-13 at home.
"This is huge for us, especially for the goals we have as far as making that playoff push," Lee said. "It definitely builds momentum."
The win could be costly because Memphis played the final 6:37 without starting guard Mike Conley, who sprained his right ankle when he landed on J.J. Barea's foot. Conley had 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting after scoring a combined 46 in his last two outings. He is to be re-evaluated Saturday.
"I can put weight on it now," Conley said. "Tomorrow is looking iffy, but hopefully after some treatment tonight and the next day we will go from there."
Memphis hosts Milwaukee Saturday.
Playing on a sore left ankle throughout the second half, Love led Minnesota with 28 points and 16 rebounds. Kevin Martin had 14 points for the Timberwolves, who lost for just the second time in seven games.
"We had our chances in the end and had some really, really great looks. We just didn't convert," Love said.
Randolph did.
He scored six points during a 9-2 Memphis run that turned a one-point deficit into a 91-85 lead with 59.6 seconds to play and later added two free throws.
"He's the man, he's the go-to player. He's a proud man, he's an extremely competitive man," said Memphis coach David Joerger. "Think of all the banging those guys take night in and night out, year in and year out. When he got down there and got it done going 11 of 20 with some offensive rebounds, makes big free throws. I'm really proud of him, really happy."
With Minnesota trailing by one, Love scored on a fadeaway jumper and on a layup after a feed from Barea for an 83-80 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Love hurt his left ankle when he collided with Marc Gasol on a drive with 2 minutes to play in the first half and landed on the foot of another Memphis player, yet gutted it out until halftime.
"When I was moving it felt fine and I continued to keep it moving," Love said. "But right now it doesn't feel so good. We just need to do all we can before tomorrow night and hopefully be ready to go." Minnesota is at Atlanta on Saturday.
Love's gimping was gone to start the second half much to the dismay of Memphis.
With the Timberwolves trailing 59-43 early in the third quarter, Love scored 14 points during an 18-4 run to get them within two. His jumper with 12.8 seconds left in the quarter gave Minnesota its first lead of the game at 67-66. Love outscored the Grizzlies 18-16 in the frame.
Ricky Rubio helped lead the comeback in the third with six assists, but did not get off the bench in the fourth as coach Rick Adelman thought Barea "was the best option for us to win."
Rubio finished with six points on 2-of-7 shooting.
"It's coach's decision and I respect it. He always does what he thinks is best for the team. Of course I wish I could play, but I respect my teammates and my coaches and what he decides," Rubio said.
Early on, Memphis took advantage of Minnesota playing its second straight game without bruising center Nikola Pekovic, who is out indefinitely with bursitis in his right ankle. Memphis had 36 points in the paint in the first half, and finished with 56.
Gasol and Lee each had nine points in the first quarter as the Grizzlies shot 63.6 percent from the field, and had 22 points in the paint in building a 30-22 lead.
A putback by Randolph and a two-handed dunk by Ed Davis off a Minnesota turnover increased Memphis' lead to 42-28 midway through the second quarter.

Game notes

Minnesota's 37 first-half points were a season low. ... Memphis F Mike Miller, who was questionable after spraining his right thumb Wednesday, finished with five points. ... Minnesota's Gorgui Dieng blocked Davis twice in a 58-second span early in second. ... Joerger grew up in Staples, Minn.

Magic Snap Three-Game Skid
The Magic beat the Bucks 113-102 to hand Milwaukee its fourth straight loss.Tags: NBA, Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, Arron Afflalo, Tobias Harris

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Arron Afflalo didn't make a big fuss after his name wasn't among those announced this week as reserve selection for the All-Star game.
Whether he was just hiding his disappointment or not, he went out Friday night and reminded the Milwaukee Bucks of why he was worthy of discussion.
Afflalo scored 21 points in three quarters of work, Tobias Harris added 18 and the Orlando Magic ran to a 113-102 victory.
The Magic snapped a three-game losing streak and extended their home winning streak over Milwaukee to 16 games.
"There are certain feelings you get at certain points in your life, whether it's a motivating factor or something that you looked forward to that didn't happen," said Afflalo, who came in averaging career highs in points, rebounds and assists. "But for me it's created a new level of passion and a new level of hunger."
Orlando led by as many as 25 points and had six players reach double-figures. Victor Oladipo finished with 15 points and seven assists, and Nik Vucevic had 12 points and six rebounds in his second game back from a concussion.
Vucevic, who had had missed 12 straight games, played 25 minutes -- about five minutes more than he did in his return against Toronto earlier in the week. He was productive with his time on the floor, connecting on 5 of 9 field goal attempts.
Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said Vucevic did ask to be taken out of the game after playing just over five minutes in the fourth quarter. Vaughn acknowledged he might have pushed him a bit too hard, but expected him to be OK.
Vaughn was pleased with his team's effort, particularly how they shared the ball.
"Everyone who played tonight had an assist," he said. "For us to score the basketball we need each other. Tonight was definitely an example of us playing together."
The only other bad news the Magic got Friday came in the form of another injury. Point guard Jameer Nelson played the entire first quarter, but sat out the remainder of the game with a sore left knee. He is day to day.
Caron Butler scored 20 points for Milwaukee, which lost its fifth straight game. The Bucks have lost 14 of their last 15 and eight straight on the road.
Milwaukee played without John Henson, who was out with a sprained right wrist. O.J. Mayo missed his third consecutive game with an illness.
Henson and Mayo's absences were felt as the Magic quickly jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first half that grew to as many as 22 points in the opening 24 minutes.
The margin hovered above 20 for most of the second half with the Bucks never getting back within single digits.
"It was frustrating, but you have to keep playing," Khris Middleton said. "Sometimes you put yourself in a position to win and sometimes you can't."
The Magic scored a season-high 67 points in the first half and took a 21-point lead into the break.
Afflalo led all scorers with 17 first-half points, with Vucevic adding 12 and Maurice Harkless 10.
Orlando dominated in the paint as well, outscoring the Bucks 30-18. The Magic also were active in the open court with a 12-3 edge in fast-break points.
Milwaukee came out misfiring and ended the half connecting on just 18 of 41 field goal attempts. That was compounded by 13 turnovers that led to 17 Orlando points.
"It's good for us," Oladipo said. "We played well as a team, we did a lot of good things. We kind of took our foot off the gas in the fourth quarter, but other than that we played a pretty good game."
Afflalo said regardless of the Magic's record, he doesn't plan on slowing down the rest of the season.
"Sometimes the NBA season is so long, when you're losing games you kind of get in this autopilot type of mode, but I've got an extreme fire burning overall, not even about tonight," he said. "I just think my focus is going to be heightened, every little thing that I do."

Game notes

The Magic improved to 3-26 when their opponent scores 100 or more points. ... Milwaukee coach Larry Drew said center Zaza Pachulia, who has missed 27 straight games with a fractured right foot, is "close" but still not ready to return to the court---
