TULSA, Okla. -- Tiffany Hayes scored a career-high 27 points, Angel McCoughtry added 21 and Erika DeSouza had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Atlanta Dream to a 85-75 victory over Tulsa on Thursday night.
The Dream trio combined to go 25-of-37 from the field for the East Conference leaders. Atlanta (17-9) dominated in the paint with 48 points. Sancho Lyttle also hit double figures with 10 points.Hayes, who scored 16 points in the first half on 7-for-8 shooting from the field, silenced the crowd of 6,841 when she hit her head on the floor in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter. After sitting out the first two minutes of the fourth, she re-entered the game."As long as a limb's not hanging, then keep pushing," Hayes said. "We're Atlanta, everyone is always coming at us. You just have to get back up and play through it."Odyssey Sims scored 22 for Tulsa, and Glory Johnson and Skylar Diggins each had 14 points. The Shock (10-18) also fared well in the low post with 44 points. The Dream victory put a dent in Tulsa's playoff hopes. The Shock fell to 10-18 and remain two games behind Los Angeles for the final playoff spot in the West.Hayes credited the team's defense for holding Tulsa 37-percent shooting, including 4 for 15 on 3-pointers."Defense leads to everything," Hayes said. "No matter who has the hot hand or who's doing what, as long as our defense is on point and our communication is there, no one can beat us but ourselves."Tulsa is a 3-point shooting team and our goal was either to not give them 3's or to make them hotly contested."McCoughtry was glad to get the win but didn't think the team played all that well."We can play so much better than tonight," McCoughtry said. "We had so many turnovers (23). We can be so much better. We still haven't reached our potential."Atlanta's Courtney Paris expected a fast pace from her former teammates."They're a great team, they play up and down real fast," Paris said. "We were right there with them. We competed, we just didn't get shots to fall in the first half. At the end of the day, you want to win and it hurts not to win. But you can look at the development and know that it is one of the best teams in the league."Tiffany Jackson-Jones saw her first action of the season for the Shock. Jackson-Jones had been out with a shin injury. She entered in the third period and scored two quick baskets."I was so nervous," Jackson-Jones said. "I was really excited. I tried to bring a lot of energy. Scoring quickly helped to settle my nerves."A veteran, Jackson-Jones understands what it takes for Tulsa to get to where the Dream are."We're a work in progress," she said. "If you remember Atlanta was 3-and-20-something a few years ago. Now they are the leaders of the Eastern Conference. If we continue to stick with it, we will be OK."

Mercury's 16-Game Win Streak Over
The Mercury's 16-game win streak came to an end with a 75-67 loss to the Lynx.

MINNEAPOLIS -- With the WNBA playoffs about three weeks away, the Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury gave a peek at what the postseason could bring.
Maya Moore scored 20 points to power the Lynx to a 75-67 victory Thursday night, snapping the Mercury's franchise-record 16-game win streak.Seimone Augustus added 19 points for Minnesota (21-6), which won its eighth straight."We kept believing, stayed with it, kept sharing the ball," Moore said after the Lynx shot just 38 percent but frustrated the Mercury with defense. "Nobody was trying to individually do it on their own."The teams have clinched the top two spots in the West and home-court advantage in the first round. Phoenix, which won the first two matchups, had its lead for the top seed cut to 1 1/2 games.Brittney Griner scored 18 points for the Mercury (22-4), who lost for the first time since June 12. Phoenix's streak was the second-longest in WNBA history, trailing only Los Angeles' 18-game run in 2001.Phoenix came in leading the league at nearly 50 percent shooting from the field, but was just 37 percent (25 for 68) against the Lynx -- led by Diana Taurasi's 5-for-21 effort."You won't see Diana shoot like that very often, but she also got a lot of attention," Mercury coach Sandy Brondello said. "Could she have gotten a few more calls? Yes, definitely. Maybe we'll get them next time. But she's a competitor. She'll bounce back."Taurasi finished with 10 points, going 0-of-7 on 3-point attempts, and was whistled for five fouls, including a technical. She offered some sarcastic commentary on the physical nature of the game."We've got to get better at football. We will," she said. "If we have to put our helmets on, that's what we're going to have to do from here on out. Like I said, we'll be ready to play football next time."After missing their first seven shots, Minnesota used an 11-0 run to take a 21-10 lead into the second quarter. It was quite a change for the Mercury, who have been burying teams early over the course of their record hot streak."I remember thinking that we were very fortunate, because if our defense wasn't as good as it was, and we're not making shots, we've got a problem," Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said. "Every time you play Phoenix, the first quarter is really important. These guys have had double-figure leads in the first half almost every time they've played in this streak. So we were really locked in."By halftime, Phoenix had cut the Lynx lead to 39-36 thanks to 12 points from Griner and 11 from Penny Taylor, who finished with 16. Lindsay Whalen scored Minnesota's last six points of the first half, leading the team with nine at the break. The Lynx led 52-51 at the start of the fourth quarter, but found some breathing room near the seven-minute mark when Moore hit back-to-back 3s to open up a 12-point advantage.Taurasi's jumper with 1:28 to play pulled the Mercury to 69-65, but they would get no closer. The Lynx visit the Mercury on Aug. 9 in the teams' final regular-season meeting.

PHOENIX -- Diana Taurasi scored 17 points to help the Phoenix Mercury cruise to their 16th straight win 90-69 over the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday night.
The win gave Phoenix (22-3) the second-longest win streak in league history. Phoenix passed Houston's 15-game streak in 1998 and moved two games shy of the WNBA mark of 18 set by Los Angeles in 2001.
Candice Dupree had 16 points and nine rebounds, while Brittney Griner added 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for the Mercury. Taurasi and Griner both sat out the fourth quarter.
Nneka Ogwumike had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Sparks (12-15), who are now 2-3 under new coach Penny Toler but have lost four of the past six. Toler took over at the All-Star break.
The Sparks played for the second consecutive game without leading scorer Candace Parker, who remained in California nursing a left knee strain.

NEW YORK -- Bill Laimbeer and his New York Liberty are in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff chase. With only a few games separating second and sixth place, every game is important. The veteran coach knows any loss could be devastating to the team's playoff chances.
New York looked to be cruising to an easy win before a 15-point lead evaporated in the third quarter, and the Liberty had to scramble to hold off Washington 80-76 in overtime Tuesday night.
"It was a very big win for our franchise," Laimbeer said. "We're trying to catch anybody and everybody in front of us. ... Every win we can get, especially home wins, are so important. It would have been very disappointing for us to lose this game."
Sugar Rodgers was a big reason the Liberty (11-14) were able to pull off the victory. Trailing 73-71 in the extra period, Plenette Pierson made a tying jumper with two and a half minutes left. Rodgers then scored five straight by hitting a deep 3-pointer and a runner to put New York up 78-73 with 1:02 to go.
Bria Hartley, who sent the game into OT with a tying layup with 0.6 seconds remaining in regulation, made a 3 with 56 seconds to play. After Pierson made two free throws with 9.9 seconds left, the Mystics had one more chance. But there was Rodgers, forcing two jump balls in the final seconds to seal the victory.
"We know Sugar can play defense," Laimbeer said. "There's no question about that -- she's a very solid defender, and I had her in down the stretch because she's a solid defender."
Tina Charles scored 23 points to lead New York, which has won four of its past five games and now heads out for a key three-game road trip -- all against Eastern Conference teams.
"These games are all important, but we'll take them one at a time," Charles said.
The Liberty led 56-41 with 1:24 left in the third quarter before the Mystics got it going. Ivory Latta hit a 3-pointer to start a 25-10 run, and Stefanie Dolson tied the score at 66 with 1:55 remaining. Charles answered with a runner in the lane to give New York the lead. After Washington came up empty on its possession, Anna Cruz hit a jumper from the corner to make it 70-66.
Washington wasn't finished, as Kara Lawson converted a three-point play with 22.7 seconds left. After New York turned over the inbounds pass, Rodgers stripped Monique Currie and hit a free throw to make it 71-69, which set up Hartley's game-tying shot.
Kia Vaughn had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Mystics (13-14), who saw their four-game winning streak end.
"I hope we learn from it," Washington coach Mike Thibault said. "If we lose this game and learn from it, and it makes us better, great. If it doesn't make us smarter, it's a waste."
Washington is still in second place in the Eastern Conference, but with all the teams so tight, anything can happen down the stretch.
"Our running joke is that you could not play for three days and go up or down three places in the standings," Thibault said.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- The Minnesota Lynx finally have their WNBA championship team back together.
Maya Moore had 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists to help Minnesota beat the Connecticut Sun 76-65 on Sunday.
Rebekkah Brunson had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Lynx (20-6) and Janel McCarville had 11 points and seven rebounds. Seimone Augustus also scored 13.
Kelsey Bone had 15 points and nine rebounds and Alyssa Thomas added eight points and nine rebounds for the Sun (10-16), who have lost 10 of 12.
It was just the second game in which defending WNBA champion Minnesota had its entire team available. Brunson missed the first 24 games after knee surgery. Augustus returned Friday after being out eight games with a knee injury.
"It's been nice having the depth that we have," Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said. "Whay and Maya, J-Mac, Tan (White) and Monie (Monica Wright) just really held the fort down. We've have a lot to be proud of.
"There's a lot of people who could've handled it differently and felt sorry for ourselves. Maya has been terrific, as you guys know, in this run. Whalen has been really, really good and above her (scoring) average. They're just warriors; just that competitive drive that fuels them every day. It's fun to be around."
It was another frustrating game for Connecticut as it needed a late surge to push its field goal percentage to just under 33 percent.
"(Minnesota) is one of the best teams in the league," Bone said. "Tonight, it really came down to shots falling. I think if we could have hit a couple of more outside jumpers and force them to play a little more defense, you'd see a different ball game."
Minnesota led for all but 47 seconds in the first quarter. Tan White's 3-pointer gave the Lynx a 17-16 lead with 3:08 left in the first quarter and they never relinquished it.
McCarville banked in a 3-pointer to give the Lynx their biggest lead, 57-40, with over a minute left in the third quarter.
Connecticut managed to rally despite its offensive woes. Katie Douglas' 3-pointer with over a minute left cut the Sun's deficit to 72-65.
"I was pleased tonight that we didn't lose our focus defensively," Connecticut coach Anne Donovan said. "Too often in our past we have not knocked shots down and the game gets away from us. I liked what we did. ... We just didn't knock shots down."
The Lynx shot 48 percent.
"There is no question we have had more struggles than other teams in the league over the past season with injuries and other aspects that have made our season harder than usual," Moore said. "Now that we have overcome some of those obstacles -- and we are not where we want to be yet -- but we have everything that we need to get there now that everyone is healthy and locked in.
"I like having the cards in our hands now and it is up to us."
