Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that the Peoria Pride will begin play this season rather than next season. “We originally thought that the Pride was gearing up for 2013,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO. “But co-owners Jasson Love and Pastor Tony Smith have accelerated the process and are geared up to compete this season. They’ll be a great addition to the North Central Division and should be very competitive. A nice group of people.”
The team will be co-owned by Jassen Love, a native of Peoria IL. He played at Woodruff High School in Peoria, Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg IL and was drafted by the ABA Chicago Steam. He has won numerous awards as a player. “This has been a long time goal of mine, to own a professional basketball team in Peoria. I know there have been teams here before, but I don’t think they truly understood what Peoria was all about and the kind of support you can receive if you do it right – and you can be sure thatTony and I will do it right this time – on and off the court.”
The other co-owner is Tony Smith, originally from Chicago. He played for Tilden Tec High School before breaking his ankle which cut short his playing career. He began coaching in the Chicago Summer Basketball Camp league. “Playing basketball is like understanding the condition of life,” stated Smith. “One must be willing to learn every part of the game in order to be a strong part of the team.” Now in his 10th year of coaching, from youth leagues to Ministry Night Basketball, “I am now taking on my biggest challenge – coaching at the professional level – and we have put together a very strong team. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
