Back when the Washington Wizards were still known as the Washington Bullets, the 1977-78 team attained championship glory. Their team numbers certainly didn’t leap off the page—10th out of 22 teams in offensive rating and ninth in defensive rating, while finishing 44-38 for a No. 3 seed—but they had enough firepower to reach the final showdown and grind out a seven-game series win against Seattle.
Elvin Hayes and Bob Dandridge each averaged more than 19 points per game during the season before upping those numbers to more than 21 points per contest in the playoffs. Add in the post play of Wes Unseld and meaningful contributions from Kevin Grevey and Mitch Kupchak, among others, and you have a steady squad that gave itself a chance to win more often than not.
The Bullets improved their record by 10 games the following year and reached the NBA Finals again, but lost 4-1 against the SuperSonics. As a result, those who got the rings earn Washington’s top honor.
