Pelicans Top Pistons In OT
Jason Smith scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds for the Pelicans, who snapped a two-game skid while handing Detroit its third straight loss. Anderson finished with 22 points on 6-of-18 shooting, including 4 of 12 from 3-point range. Jrue Holiday added 19 points and Al-Farouq Aminu had 11 points and 14 rebounds.
New Orleans native Greg Monroe had 28 points and 10 rebounds for Detroit, which led by 3 points early in overtime before Anderson's first 3 of the extra session tied it. Brandon Jennings added 25 points and Rodney Stuckey 20.
Detroit had one last lead when Jennings stole the ball from Holiday and heaved the ball down-court to Monroe for a fast-break dunk to make it 103-102. That's when Anderson responded with his second 3 of the period to give New Orleans the lead for good.
Holiday stole the ball from Jennings, drew a foul and hit one free throw. Monroe then hit a free throw and Detroit started fouling. After Anderson's free throws, Jennings hit a quick floater off the glass. Detroit then fouled Tyreke Evans, who missed his second free throw, but Josh Smith was called for a lane violation, and Evans hit on his extra chance to seal it.
Evans finished with 14 points in his return from an ankle sprain Friday. The Pelicans said on Monday that Evans would miss a week or two, but he didn't miss a game. Eric Gordon also scored 14 for New Orleans.
Smith had 11 points for Detroit and Andre Drummond had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Pelicans led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter when Holiday's 15-foot pull-up made it 83-71, but that lead evaporated when Stuckey's turnaround jumper late in the period began a 12-0 Detroit run that included Monroe's layup and putback. The Pistons had several chances to extend the run, but Kyle Singler missed a free throw and Monroe missed two more before Smith's layup put New Orleans back in front.
Jennings' off-balance pull-up from 14 feet had Detroit as close as 91-90. Jennings then sought to give the Pistons their first lead of the second half on a drive through traffic, but he was stripped by Smith, and the Pelicans broke the other way, with Eric Gordon angling toward the hoop and then whipping a bounce pass back through the paint to Aminu for a dunk.
Detroit didn't wilt and tied the game at 96 on Josh Smith's running hook with 1:19 left. Both teams then went cold, each failing to score on a pair of possessions, and the game went to overtime after Jennings missed two jumpers in the final seconds.
The Pelicans shot better than 51 percent in the first half, when they twice built, and nearly squandered, double digit leads.
They led 29-18 on Holiday's 3, but Detroit closed the period with a 10-0 run that included a short jumper and midrange fadeway by Stuckey.
New Orleans' lead was back to 12 when Evans' driving layup made it 49-37, but Detroit began to chip away again late in the second quarter, when Jennings hit two of his four 3-pointers in the opening half. Monroe's layup got it as close as 55-51. Then Holiday set up a driving layup by passing the ball to himself off of an unsuspecting Jennings, making it 57-51 at halftime.
Game notes
The Pistons rested Chauncey Billups in what was the Pistons' second game in as many nights, while Stuckey returned from a two-game absence cause by left knee soreness. ... The Pelicans improved to 6-5 at home, while Detroit fell to 5-6 on the road.
