Mercury Get Decisive Win Over Lynx
Brittney Griner scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Phoenix Mercury defeated the Minnesota Lynx 85-71 in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

PHOENIX -- A key third-quarter stretch and tough defense on the league MVP has the Phoenix Mercury a win away from the WNBA Finals.
Brittney Griner had 23 points and 11 rebounds and the Mercury held off a late rally to beat the Minnesota Lynx 85-71 on Friday night in Game 1 of the best-of-3 Western Conference finals.
"Defensively we were just the team unit, so locked in, we have been so consistently good on the defensive end all season long and that was the key for us," Phoenix coach Sandy Brondello said.
In particular, defense on league scoring leader and MVP Maya Moore, who was held to nine points on 3-of-9 shooting.
"Obviously, DeWanna Bonner, she is a great defender," Brondello said. "She probably doesn't get that kind of recognition, as she should, but she is, and she is always locking down the best player. Maya Moore is a great player but I thought we executed quite well against her."
Penny Taylor added 16 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and a pair of steals for the Mercury, who built a 25-point lead in the third quarter before Minnesota got within 10 in the final period.
"It's been tonight what I have been trying to do all season, is just fill the gaps, do what I can to lift the team when we need to," the 12th-year veteran Taylor said. "Tonight it was a lot of assists in the first half and then in the second, I tried to be more aggressive on the boards and that sort of thing."
Taylor missed her first three shots and then made 3 of 4 in the third when Phoenix pulled away.
Game 2 is Sunday in Minneapolis.
Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve credited Phoenix for keeping her big scorer quiet on Friday.
"Early in the game I thought that Maya didn't have an understanding of what was available," Reeve said. "I thought that Phoenix, in typical fashion, their team defense was really good. So maybe where Maya had openings, they closed quickly and her recognition of what happens next was not very good."
Diana Taurasi added 17 points, six rebounds and five assists on an off-shooting night (5-for-15) while Bonner had 16 points and seven rebounds for Phoenix, which won three of four meetings with Minnesota during the regular season.
The Mercury held Minnesota to 40 percent shooting (29-of-73) and outrebounded the Lynx 45-31.
"Everyone kind of took turns on making sure the boards were sound and when we do that it gives us a little more freedom on offense to go," Taurasi said.
Lindsay Whalen had 25 points to lead the Lynx. Rebekkah Brunson had 10 points and eight rebounds.
"We have some things to fix," Brunson said. "We didn't approach this game the way we should have but we know that we can play a lot better."
Whalen hit a 3-pointer, had a steal and easy layup in a 17-8 run that got Minnesota to 75-64 with 5:16 left but Taylor drew a fifth foul on Moore and sank the free throws to give Phoenix a little breathing room. Taylor and Taurasi hit free throws in the final minute after the Lynx pulled to 81-71 with 1:30 left.
Taylor had eight points and a key alley-oop pass to Griner during a decisive 14-0 run midway through the third quarter that gave Phoenix a 63-39 lead over the defending WNBA champions.
The Lynx were 4-for-15 at one point in the third quarter, after trailing by just nine early in the period.
"That was probably the best stretch we've had on both sides of the ball this year," Taurasi said. "In a game where we obviously have to play at that level to beat them. That's just how good they are."
It is the third meeting in four years in the conference finals for the Lynx and Mercury.
Both teams swept their respective first-round playoff series, setting up the much-hyped conference final matchup.
Phoenix jumped out to a 9-0 lead after hitting its first four shots but Minnesota bounced back with eight straight points itself and trailed 23-20 after the first quarter.
But Moore made only 1 of 6 from the field, scoring two points, as the Lynx trailed 42-31 at the break.
The Lynx swept the Mercury in the 2011 and 2013 conference finals on their way to winning WNBA titles. Minnesota has reached the final round for three straight years.
Moore earned league MVP honors, averaging nearly 24 points and eight rebounds a game. She shot 48 percent from the field during the season.

Lynx Eliminate Stars, Hammon's Career Over
Becky Hammon's 12 points and four assists weren't enough as Lindsay Whalen scored 31 points in the Lynx's 94-89 win over the Stars.

SAN ANTONIO -- Lindsay Whalen took a stand after getting pushed around early by the San Antonio Stars, giving the Minnesota Lynx the boost they needed to come back.
Whalen had a career playoff-high 31 points, and Minnesota rallied for a 94-89 victory over San Antonio on Saturday, advancing to the Western Conference finals and ending Becky Hammon's playing career.
Seimone Augustus scored 21 points, Maya Moore had 16 and Janel McCarville 10 for Minnesota, which will face the winner between Phoenix and Los Angeles after sweeping the first-round series.
"Offensively, we call (Whalen) the bully," Augustus said. "She just kind of puts her head down, goes to the basket and looks for contact.
"If she gets a call, she gets to the free throw (line) and knocks it down, but if not, she plays through it. And that's been her mentality the entire year, just be aggressive.
"Tonight it was just contagious, once she got going, myself got going, Maya got going, J-Mac got going. All of us had that aggressive mentality that she had."
The Stars had no answer for the defending WNBA champions' offensive depth. After their attempts to stall Whalen's drives, Minnesota allowed Augustus and Moore to close out the game.
Whalen's aggressive play was reminiscent of Hammon's career, which she started with the New York Liberty before being traded to San Antonio in 2007.
Hammon, who is retiring after 16 seasons in the WNBA, had 12 points and four assists in her final game. She received a standing ovation and warm wishes from Minnesota's players, especially Augustus.
"I just congratulated her and said that I love her," Augustus said. "Thank you for everything you did for women and sports."
Hammon will become the first woman to serve as a full-time NBA assistant coach, joining the San Antonio Spurs in their quest for a championship repeat.

Stars veteran Becky Hammon was saluted by members of the opposing Lynx after her final WNBA game Saturday night.
Kayla McBride had 25 points, Danielle Adams added 23 and Jia Perkins had 17 for San Antonio.
The Stars appeared ready to extend Hammon's career by getting off to a fast start and stifling the Lynx defensively.
"Physically, we weren't there, but mentally we knew it," Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said. "We just didn't respond. They did exactly what we thought. For two games they played great."
The Stars scored the game's first seven points and went on to a 22-4 lead. The early run included a turnaround jumper and a 3-pointer by Adams.
"It was a shame to start the game that way and then just kind of trail off," Hammon said. "We know they are a great team and have tremendous scorers. To do what we did in the first quarter and for them to still ring up 90-plus points, they really put it on us from second quarter on."
Minnesota rallied midway through the second quarter, sparked by Reeve's frustration with the officiating crew.
After her pleas for a call from official Amy Bonner weren't answered, Reeve turned to WNBA chief of basketball operations Renee Brown and said, "Adams is in the lane (defensively) for 10 seconds and they are not calling it."
Brown was in attendance to give Hammon the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award prior to the game.
"It never is (a way to spark the team) for me," Reeve said. "I know people say that, but I think that's the biggest myth there is. That gives me too much credit that I'm able to think like that."
Instead, Reeve credited Whalen's aggression.
The Lynx closed the first half on an 18-8 run to cut the Stars' lead to 44-40.
Whalen scored 12 points in the second quarter, hitting four of five shots and making all six free throws.
"Lindsay got us going in the second quarter when she had enough of the way we were playing," Reeve said. "She was contagious in such a positive way."
A pair of 3-pointers by McBride were the only points for San Antonio in the final minutes of the first half with the exception of a pair of free throws by Danielle Robinson with 0.5 seconds remaining.
Moore's 3-pointer gave Minnesota its first lead at 46-44 with 8:39 left in the third quarter.
That came seconds after Hughes received a technical foul.
The technical gave San Antonio a temporary spark that turned into a 59-53 lead, but Minnesota closed on a 14-5 run for a 67-64 lead entering the fourth.
"I thought the game got really physical," Hughes said. "I think they literally tried to own the paint and we didn't resist it well enough. We got ourselves in foul trouble trying to do that. You have to start with giving credit where credit is due. They are just a very good team."

Moore Carries Lynx To Win
Minnesota Lynx forward Maya Moore talks with ESPN's Holly Rowe about her team's win over the Stars.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The defending champion Minnesota Lynx got a reminder from the San Antonio Stars that nothing comes easy in the postseason.
Hours after being named the WNBA's most valuable player, Maya Moore scored 24 points to help the beat the Stars 88-84 Thursday night in the opener of the Western Conference semifinals.
Minnesota led by 15 with 9 minutes to go before the Stars went on an 18-2 run to go ahead, 73-72 lead with 4:12 to play. However, Seimone Augustus scored six of her 16 points in the final 2:11 as Minnesota recovered to pull out the win.
"I was happy for a large part of the game, then something bad happened. Up 70-55 we kind of had them right where we wanted and then the bottom fell out defensively," said Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, crediting Augustus, who has battled knee problems this season, for righting the ship. "Mone was big. Those last three baskets were huge for us."
Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is at San Antonio on Saturday night.
Kayla McBride scored 21 points to lead the Stars. Becky Hammon scored 14 of her 17 in the second half, including a spinning shot with 1.9 seconds left that pulled the Stars within two.
"She wants to keep playing in a big way," Stars coach Dan Hughes said of Hammon, who will retire at season's end to become an assistant coach with the NBA's San Antonio Spurs. "I've had a ringside seat for about 50 of those, so that didn't totally surprise me."
However, Moore made two free throws with 1.3 seconds left and the Lynx beat the Stars for the 18th time in 21 meetings.
After the Stars controlled the game early, Minnesota went on an 8-0 run and led by double digits in the first quarter, capped off by a highlight-reel alley-oop play with Lindsay Whalen passing to Moore for an emphatic bucket.
Then the Lynx struggled, missing eight consecutive shots, and the Stars capitalized and pulled to 24-22. However, the Lynx started making shots again and increased their lead to 14 before taking a 40-30 advantage at halftime.
Moore led all first-half scorers with 13 while McBride had 10 for San Antonio.
"I was just trying to come in and give us some energy early by knocking down shots," said McBride, a rookie from Notre Dame who was playing in her first playoff game.
Hammon made a driving layup, was fouled, and hit the free throw to put San Antonio ahead 73-72 with just over four minutes left. But it was a short-lived advantage, as Moore hit a layup to put Minnesota back up for good, then blocked McBride's layup attempt on the ensuing possession.
"That's what the playoffs are about," Moore said, after Minnesota opened its 10th playoff series in the past four years. "It's about option 3 and option 4 and who can be more persistent at what they want to get. San Antonio and, especially, Becky will keep working until she gets what she wants, and we had to make it tough on her.
Whalen finished with 11 assists and 10 points for Minnesota, which lost in San Antonio during its last regular season meeting.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Briann January scored 16 points and fellow all-star Tamika Catchings added 15 as the Indiana Fever clinched a playoff spot for the 10th straight season with a 76-63 win over the New York Liberty on Thursday night.
Indiana held the Liberty (13-19) to 39 percent shooting and used a stingy defense to build a 46-21 halftime margin. New York was limited to 27 percent shooting in the first half and committed 13 turnovers.
"We just knew we had to be prepared and come correct," Catchings said. "We came in and we were really focused. We always talk about `Just get in the playoffs and don't worry about how you get in.' I think for us, the pieces are starting to click."
Tina Charles led the Liberty (14-18) with 15 points. Cappie Pondexter added 10 for New York. The Liberty made one final run to start the fourth quarter, pulling within 61-49 with 7:59 left in the game, but the Fever clamped down and held on down the stretch.
January's seven points in the first quarter set the tone early for Indiana. She helped Indiana get out in front 13-7, then when her teammates got involved, Indiana was off and running.
While the playoff seeds are yet to be determined, New York was not eliminated with the loss. There is a scenario in which the Liberty can still make the playoffs. But Liberty coach Bill Laimbeer acknowledges Thursday's loss has the Liberty on the outside looking in.
"We have to scoreboard watch," Laimbeer said. "Destiny is out of our own hands."
New York and Indiana will square off Sunday at Madison Square Garden in the regular season finale for both teams. Indiana will be going for a season series sweep against the Liberty for the first time since 2009.
