ABA TO RE-LAUNCH THE WABA

WABA-thumbIndianapolis, IN.  The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that it will re-launch the WABA with play anticipated to begin in May, 2013.  “There’s no doubt that the interest in another women’s professional basketball league is there,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO.  “But it has  been difficult organizing the league.  Fortunately, we’ve put together a group of people with the backgrounds and skills to make the WABA something really special and to provide opportunities to those who want to own, coach and play in a top-notch professional women’s league.”
Sonya Nichols will serve as WABA CEO.  Ms Nichols boasts a sports resume that includes an assortment of both on and off court experiences including a tenure at James Madison University as a scholarship member of the NCAA tournament team.  While in ISHA, she held the records for most rebounds in a game, season and career (two of the three are current); the number six rebounder in the nation’s history behind greats like Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Miller and has helped organize and managed Michael Jordan’s Basketball Camp, University of Illinois, Wisconsin and Notre Dame camps.  She i9s currently in the telecommunications industry. -> Read more

NEW YORK JAMM ADDED TO ABA EXPANSION TEAMS

statue-of-liberty-thumbIndianapolis, IN.  The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that the New York JAMM  has been added to the league beginning next season and will become a part of the fast-growing Northeast Division.  “We’re really pleased to be able to add another team to the NE Division,” stated ABA CEO Joe Newman.  “And in Howard Jordan, the team owner, we have an excellent owner with great experience on and off the court.  In a very competitive market, we believe that the Jamm will add much to the NY sports scene.”
The team will be located in Westchester County, just north of NYC.  An author and illustrator of the children’s book Mommat and Me, Jordan played college basketball, football and track at Concordia Colletge in Bronxville NY and has one year experience in the NFL as well as a year of NBA Pro-Am experience.
For 30 years he was a high school coach and has owned and operated and  coached the JAMM New York AAU basketball program.  “Joe and I have been talking about doing an ABA team in Westchester for a couple of years,” added Jordan.  “I’ve been waiting for the Northeast Division to develop and with the addition of Buffalo, and anticipated teams in NYC and Long Island, I think we’ll have one of the best divisions in the ABA. I am genuinely excited. The talent in the NYC area is fabulous and we will be very competitive.”

ABA IN CHINA

BALL WORLD PEACE SET TO PLAY NEXT SEASON

Indianapolis, IN.  The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that it has added an expansion team to its Northern California division for next season with a new team named Ball World Peace.  “It is a very unusual name but the idea is very appealing,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO.  “Using professional basketball and the ABA as a constant reminder of the goal of world peace is an admirable thing to do and we’re excited to be a part of it.”
The team will be based in Folsom, CA and is the brainchild of Brian Parker, a native of Hitchcock TX whose family moved to Hanford CA where Brian was 1st team all-league at Hanford West High School  prior to playing for three years at Holy Name University.  After graduating with a degree in business communications, Brain went on to play in the ABA (2009-2011).  He has also coached at the at the middle school and high school levels.
“While I love playing and coaching basketball,” added Parker, “I have a knack for business and have run a successful business for several years.  Now, I want to mix my love of basketball and business into one.  This should be the experience of a lifetime being in the ABA.  I decided on the name because I wanted a constant reminder that world peace is within our reach if we all work together to achieve it.”

GEORGIA-LINA HURRICANES ADDED TO ABA FOR 2013 SEASON

Indianapolis, IN.  The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that it has added a team in the August-Richmond County of Georgia to be known as the Georgiia-Lina Hurricaness because of its close proximity to the South Carolina state line.  “We’re very excited about this team and the ownership group; it is a great fit and will be able to play teams in both our Mid-Atlantic Division and our Southeastern Division next season,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO.  “And the owners of the team bring a tremendous amount of experience both on and off the court.” -> Read more

ILL CITY BEAST SET TO PLAY THIS SEASON

Indianapolis, IN.  The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that the Ill City Beast located in Chicago IL will be a late addition to the league this season.  “It is unusual to be adding a team at such a late date,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO, “but the owners and management have been working hard all summer and full to put things together and it appears that they are ready to go.  We’re looking forward to adding them to the schedules in the North Central Division.”

CENTENARY COLLEGE EXTRAVAGANZA FOR JERSEY EXPRESS

Hackettstown NJ.  Centenary College will host an extravaganza as it introduces the ABA Jersey Express to the community.  This will be a full afternoon of charitable events and entertainment beginning with a 5K to benefit the Athletes Turf Fund.  Sign-up for the 5K begins at 1pm, followed by the Taste of the Town, which will support the Tommy Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund from 330-530pm.  The Express will be participating in all of the day’s events and will cap off the day with a team introduction and a mini game beginning at 530.  During the events, the Share Your Care for Clare Droesch – Crush Cancer Fund, will be taking donations and auctioning off memorabilia and providing prizes and more prizes. -> Read more

INTERNATIONAL READING ASSOCIATION TEAMS UP WITH ABA ON FAST BREAK FOR READING CAMPAIGN

Newark DE.  The International Reading Associated announced today tht it is partnering with the American Basketball Association (ABA) to promote more reading by students through a joint promotional campaign called Fast Break for Reading.
IRA’s 60,000 teachers and literacy professionals and the ABA’s 90 professional basketball teams will join forces to stimulate reading habits among young people by offering incentives to students who commit to do a minimum of 10 minutes of reading every night during the campaign. The effort begins today, November 12th, and runs through the end of the ABA season on March 10, 2013.  The declared goal is to generate a million minutes of reading.
“IRA is very pleased to be partnering with the ABA,” explained Stephen Sye, the Association’s Senior Marketing Manager.  “Like us, the ABA is concerned about literacy in the US and is joining with us to make a significant difference in the reading habits of young people.”  Joe Newman, ABA CEO, agrees.  “We can think of nothing more important for young people than to acquire good reading skills as this can be a life changer.” -> Read more

WINNING THE SMALL WAY…THE ABA IS MORE THAN JUST A GAME

Fresno , CA.  The new expansion ABA Fresno Flight played their inaugural games against the veteran Sacramento Heatwave last weekend and won consecutive games over a ranked team.  But the way they did it was what made these games special.
It was the professional debut of their 19 year old point guard Derrick Randolph.  Derrick is working hard toward overcoming much adversity towards his goal of playing in the NBA.  He has dealt with homelessness and the tragedy of three family member’s deaths in one week.  Having grown up on the tough streets of Chicago, the move to Fresno CA has been rewarding and helpful to achieving his goal.  Derrick will also enroll in college in January now knowing that he is safe and has a place to live.  He can now concentrate on his basketball skills and getting a great education. -> Read more

TAMPA BAY RAIN OPENS ABA SEASON WITH THREE QUICK WINS

Tampa Bay Rain LogoIndianapolis, IN.   The Tampa Bay Rain opened the 2012-2013 ABA season with three early wins this weekend and established themselves as a team to watch.  On Friday and Saturday, they defeated the Southwest Warriors 122-60 and on Saturday 100-67 before taking on the 9th ranked Gulf Coast Flash on Sunday and winning a tough battle, 129-117.
The regular ABA season begins officially Saturday, November 10th but several ABA teams will be playing games earlier due to venue availability.  “We have quite a few expansion teams in the ABA this season,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO.  “Many of them were ranked in the pre-season Power Rankings.  One of them was the Tampa Bay Rain.  We knew they would be strong and they proved it over the weekend.  This should be a very competitive season.”

JERSEY EXPRESS VS CONNECTICUT TOPBALLERZ IN FIRST NATIONAL TV GAME

IN.  The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that it has added the Buffalo716ers to its growing list of expansion teams for the 2013 season.  “Buffalo is a great sports city and certainly is long overdue for an ABA team,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO.  “We have waited for quite a few years for the right ownership group, and we finally have it in Franklin Jackson and Tawan Slaughter.  They’ve been working hard for several months putting things together there and we are confident that they’ll do a great job.”
